Ἀταλάντην—Talantonisi: it had been fortified by the Athenians in order that they might prevent the injury caused to Euboea by piratical craft sailing out of Opus and the neighbourhood. τοῦ τε φρουρίου—at the beginning of the war Athens had 2,500 men in such permanent garrisons in and out of Attica (Aristot.
