the flight of the Conspirators, and the surrender of Lee; also of the assassination of the President; the surrender of the forces under Johnston and other leaders; the flight and capture of the head of the Confederacy of traitors; the closing scenes of the war; the exchange and treatment of prisoners; and the freewill offerings of the people in support of the Government.
Also an outline sketch of the efforts of the loyal citizens to reorganize the Governments of States which had been disorganized by the Rebellion, and to restore the Union and re-establish it upon the sure foundations of Justice.
