ἀπότροφον: i.e. brought up apart from his mother. The story may be an explanation of the Egyptian title ‘ka-mutf’, i.e. husband of his mother, applied to Amon and other gods; but probably it is a Greek invention (v.s.).

συμμεῖξαι, coitum habere; cf. iv. 114. 1; the sense elsewhere in H. is colloqui (e.g. iv. 151. 2). He probably uses an ambiguous word designedly, though the sensus obscenus is clear.
