For this immigration cf. i. 7. 3 n.; App. I, § 8. The Macedonians, however, rather succeeded than dwelt with (σύνοικοι) Phrygians in Europe. Φρυγῶν ἄποικοι. So Eudoxus ap. Steph. Byz. Ἀρμένιοι δὲ τὸ μὲν γένος ἐκ Φρυγίας καὶ τῇ φωνῇ πολλὰ φρυγίζουσι. This statement, long discredited, is more acceptable now that the primitive home of the Aryans is held by many to be the steppes of Southern Russia, not the Asiatic plateau. In any case the relationship seems certain. So Gen. x. 3, Togarmah (Armenia) is brother of Ashkenaz (Phrygia; cf. the Phrygian hero Ascanius, and the lake and district Ascania). The name Armenia (Armina) appears first in the inscriptions of Darius; cf. i. 15 n.
