προΐζετο. The king sat as πρόεδρος on a raised seat or throne (iv. 88. 1; vii. 44). Elsewhere H. uses προκατίζειν (i. 14. 3, 97. 1) or προκατίζεσθαι (v. 12. 2).

ταξίαρχοι: here and in vii. 99. 1 of sea captains, elsewhere more properly of army officers.

For Sidonian precedence cf. vii. 100. 2 n. The absence of all mention of the four Persian admirals (vii. 97) and the prominence of Mardonius are suspicious features in this council; cf. App. XXI.
