διαβολή: cf. Isocr. Antid. 18 ἔστι μέγιστον κακὸν διαβολή: τί γὰρ ἂν γένοιτο ταύτης κακουργότερον; and Lucian, Διαβολή 4. Apelles' picture of calumny there described gave rise to that by Botticelli. Lying was a grave offence in Persia (i. 138 n.; Vendid. iv. 54-5; Behist. Inscr. i. 10, iv. 5, 6, 13, 14).
