αἱ ἕνδεκα μυριάδες. For the article with a round number cf. viii. 82. 2. It looks as if the Thespians were brought in to fill up the number.

οἱ περιεόντες. 700 Thespians had fallen at Thermopylae (vii. 202, 222, 226; viii. 25).

ὅπλα. The panoply of the heavy-armed soldier (cf. 63. 2); being without this, they fought as ψιλοί.
