It looks as if the Thespians were brought in to fill up the number. οἱ περιεόντες. 700 Thespians had fallen at Thermopylae (vii. 202, 222, 226; viii. 25). ὅπλα. The panoply of the heavy-armed soldier (cf. 63. 2); being without this, they fought as ψιλοί.
