ἐφάνη κτλ.: ch. 83. 2 and 84 as well as this sentence are rejected by Krüger and Gomperz as containing a collection of disconnected notices here out of place, and also because of some strange or corrupt words and phrases, e. g. καὶ τὸ ἄνω τῆς γνάθου, ἐπείτε δέ, τρόπῳ τοιούτῳ. Stein takes refuge in his usual theory of notes incorporated in a second edition, a suggestion more applicable to ch. 81, 82, since the words ὑστέρῳ μέντοι χρόνῳ and καὶ τῶν Πλαταιέων συχνοί have no point unless the sentence follows immediately on the end of ch. 80, the contrast being with the Helots and Aeginetans. The notice may be modelled on iii. 12.
