κἀγὼ -- ε<*>ναι . Contrast Aesch. P. V. 1032 ψευδηγορεῖν γὰρ οὐκ ἐπίσταται στόμα | τὸ Δῖον, ἀλλὰ πᾶν ἔπος τελεῖ: see on 380 D above.

ἤλπιζον: ‘fancied,’ not ‘hoped’: cf. V 451 A, IX 573 C, and ἐλπίς in VII 517 B. This idiomatic usage is illustrated by Rutherford on Babrius 9. 2.
