ἕως ἄν τις -- πείσῃ. Cf. Phaed. 85 C, D, Gorg. 527 A.

ἐφιῇ -- τοιοῦτον. See cr. n. The present ἐφιῇ is slightly better than ἐφῇ: for τὸ τοιοῦτον denotes the state or condition rather than the act. ἐφῇ comes rather nearer to the reading of A and II, and is preferred by Baiter and Hartman. For ζητεῖ H. Wolf conjectured ποιεῖ, Herwerden τίκτει or ἐντίκτει, in both cases needlessly: cf. with J. and C. ἐθέλει in 11 370 B. The sentiment is generalised in VIII 563 E.

οὔτε ἄρα . οὔτε followed by δέ is rare (examples in Kühner Gr. Gr. II p. 832) but δέ follows τε very often, especially in πολὺ δέ, μέγιστον δέ etc.: see II 367 C note Cobet's οὔτἆρα i.q. οὔτοι ἄρα, though approved by Hartman, is therefore unnecessary.
