St. p. 95) justly observes that the φύσις τοῦ καλοῦ of III 401 C is “the true beauty, which has an adequate external form, whereas that of Book V is the essence of Beauty, which is never fully expressed in any outward form.” The contrast significantly marks the greater Idealism of Books V—VII.
