ἄλλος λόγος. H.'s own view. It is to be noted that here he adopts in a qualified manner a combination adopted elsewhere (i. 103; iv. 1) without reserve. For the facts generally in cc. 11 and 12 cf. i. 15 nn. For the Araxes cf. i. 202 n.; here it seems to be the Volga.
θάψαι. That there were tombs of a previous race on the Dniester is probable; H. may have seen them himself. If they were Cimmerian, their position in the west of Scythia tends to prove that the race migrated—in part at least —south-west, not south-east, and this would be the natural line of retreat before invaders from the east.
