Lyon purposed here to surprise them by a night attack; but it was so late when all was ready that he deferred the attempt until the 9th, when he again advanced from Springfield in two columns; his main body, led by himself, seeking the enemy in front; while Sigel, with 1,200 men, was to gain their rear by their right.
Price had planned an attack on our camps that night; but, jealousies arising, had resigned the chief command to McCulloch, who had recalled the order to advance, because of the intense darkness of the night.
