Mdcclxx.’ This sermon is reprinted, with illustrative notes, &c., in Thornton's Pulpit of the American Revolution, pp. 147-186. ‘At Eleven o'clock His Honor the Lieutenant-Governor, accompanied by the Honorable His Majesty's Council, the Honorable House of Representatives and a Number of other Gentlemen, preceded by the first Company in Cambridge of the Regiment of Militia, commanded by the Honorable Brigadier Brattle, went in Procession to the Meeting-House, where a Sermon suitable to the Occasion was preached by the Rev'd Mr. Samuel Cooke, of Cambridge, from these words: 2 Samuel. XXIII. 3, 4. The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over man must be just, ruling in the fear of God, etc. After Divine Service the Procession returned to Harvard Hall, where an Entertainment was provided.’1—Boston Gazette, June 4, 1770.
