Neptune was the ancestor of Theseus, Jove of Pirithous. ‘Invicti viribus’ seems to refer to the story told above on v. 392, as if Charon meant to say that though he could plead that his passengers were deserving from their divine descent, and further that he had no choice in the matter, as they were stronger than he, it did not avail to shield him from punishment.
