ἀπώρων, ‘saw from afar’ (ix. 69. 2). They only reached the temple of Athene Pronaia (§ 3, ch. 39 n.) near the eastern entrance of the town, while the temple of Apollo stood on a high terrace beyond a valley in the north-western part of Delphi.


For the portent of the arms cf. those of Heracles at Thebes before Leuctra (Xen. Hell. vi. 4. 7; Diod. xv. 53; Polyaen. ii. 3. 8).
