τὸ ἐπίσημον: probably (cf. 92. 2 σημήιον) figure-head at the bow of a ship (iii. 37. 2 n., 59. 3), not flag. Polyaenus (viii. 53. 1) says Artemisia varied her colours, showing now Greek, now Persian, but this is unlikely, though flags are represented as early as this at the sterns of Athenian ships (Torr, Anc. Ships, p. 100).

ἐπισταμένους, ‘knowing,’ but ἠπιστέατο (inf.), ‘they believed.’ Similarly ἐπιλέξασθαι is carelessly used in two senses (ch. 22. 1), ἐξελεῖν (ch. 121. 1), ἀναθεῖναι (ii. 135. 3).
