τῆς γὰρ κτἑ.: cf. Hes. Ἔργα 287 ff. τὴν μέν τοι κακότητα καὶ ἰλαδὸν (in abundance) ἔστιν ἑλέσθαι | ῥηιδίως: λείη μὲν ὁδός, μάλα δ᾽ ἐγγύθι ναίει. | τῆς δ᾽ ἀρετῆς ἱδρῶτα θεοὶ προπάροιθεν ἔθηκαν | ἀθάνατοι: μακρὸς δὲ καὶ ὄρθιος οἶμος ἐς αὐτὴν | καὶ τρηχὺς τὸ πρῶτον: ἐπὴν δ᾽ εἰς ἄκρον ἵκηται, | ῥηιδίη δἤπειτα πέλει, χαλεπή περ ἐοῦσα. The passage is cited also in Rep. ii. 364 ξ. Simonides himself had said (Frag. 32 Schn., 58 Bgk.) ἔστι τις λόγος τὰν ἀρετὰν ναίειν δυσαμβάτοις ἐπὶ πέτραις.
ἐκτῆσθαι: added by Plato (cf. 340 e) to explain ῥηιδίην. After vowels Plato uses κεκτῆσθαι, after consonants both ἐκτῆσθαι and κεκτῆσθαι.
ἐπανόρθωμα: Socrates is making a defence of Simonides against attack, not a correction of error. His reply however εἰμὶ ... ἰατρός falls in with Protagoras's μεῖζον ἁμάρτημα κτἑ. Cf. a above.
