ἐν τούτῳ: see on 310 d, l. 27.

μήκη πράττειν: the peculiar expression is chosen to conform the illustration to the truth to be explained, namely, that it is knowledge which must determine us τὰ ἡδέα τὰ λυπηρὰ πράττειν.

. . . δύναμις: the (subjective) impression of the visible world. The passage is directed against Protagoras's theory of knowledge. See Introd. p. 3.

ἐπλάνα καὶ ἐποίει : ἄν is not added, because the ἄν with ἐφάνη above is still in force. Cf. Phaedr. 229 c οὐκ ἂν ἄτοπος εἴην: εἶτα φαίην, Phaedo 87 e ἀν- αγκαῖον μέντἂν εἴη . . . τότ᾽ ἤδη ἐπιδεικνύοι, Lys. 208 b ἐῷεν ἄν. πόθεν ἐῷεν; Ar. Eq. 1057 οὐκ ἂν μαχέσαιτο: χέσαιτο γάρ.

πράξεσι, αἱρέσεσι: limit both preceding verbs.

ἄκυρον: without force, vain. Cf. Crito 50 b ἐν αἱ γενόμεναι δίκαι μηδὲν ἰσχύουσιν, ἀλλ᾽ ὑπ̓ ἰδιωτῶν ἄκυροι γίγνονται.
