εἰ ἐπέζωσε. The aorist with εἰ implies that the child's destiny could not now be realized, as they believe that he had been put to death.
παρὰ σμικρά. Translate: ‘For in small things indeed have some of our oracles issued, and that which concerns visions altogether ends in weakness.’ This utterance is dramatic, but, even so, it is curious in so strong a believer in oracles as H.
