Approaches to Richmond. note.--The above map does not pretend to trace the various wagon roads that traverse south-eastern Virginia, and thus may be deemed imperfect; but any map that purported to give such roads, would be more likely to deceive than to enlighten. There are different views to what constitutes a road — the Virginia estimate being remarkably liberal. Roads abound and radiate in every direction throughout this region: but nine-tenths of them range, save in the dryer portions of Summer and Fall, from very bad to impassable. |
