Percellunt magnas quercus: exciditur ilex:
Fraxinus frangitur, atque abies consternitur alta:
Pinus proceras pervortunt: omne sonabat
Arbustum fremitu silvai frondosai.

Comp. also 11. 135 foll. “Stabula alta” 9. 388., 10. 723, which show that ‘alta’ here means high, not deep. For the sense comp. note on v. 8 above.
