In the pass of Karabel, south of the road from Smyrna to Sardis, two monuments have been found, of which one (figured in Rawlinson) corresponds to H.'s account. For it cf. Garstang, pp. 171 seq. The road from ‘the Ephesian territory to Phocaea’ is clearly not the road along the coast, but one more inland, round Mount Sipylus.
