κροκοδείλους. Crocodiles were thought especially to belong to the Nile (cf. Arr. Anab. vi. 1. 2); this is one of the reasons why H. confuses Niger and Nile (ii. 32. 7 n.). Καρυανδέα. Scylax was a neighbour of H., for Caryanda is an island off Caria. The work which goes by his name is probably of the fourth century, and is almost entirely concerned with the Mediterranean; it says nothing of the Indian Ocean (Bunbury, i. 384 seq.). Aristotle (Pol. vii. 14. 3, 1332 b) quotes Scylax as to the Indians. His voyage may be dated about 509 B. C.
