Φοίνικες. This settlement from Tyre is dated by H. (ii. 44) five generations before the birth of Heracles, on the faith of mythical genealogies; cf. iv. 147, v. 59. Thasos was colonized from Paros (Thuc. iv. 104) circ. 700 B. C. (Busolt, i. 458), the best-known colonist being the poet Archilochus.

οὔνομα ἔσχε. The old name was Aeria (Steph. Byz.) or Odonis (Hesych.). For the aorist cf. vii. 61. 3, 74. 1.
