στυπτηρίης. The Egyptian ‘alum’ was the best; it was used in dyeing; Wiedemann suggests that it was used for making the wood fireproof. Stein thinks that ἀργυρίου is to be supplied to μνέας: more probably H. intends to contrast the liberality of the king with the meanness of the Greeks.
