κόλον = ἄκερων; cf. Tac. Germ. 5 ‘ne armentis quidem gloria frontis’. The fact is right that the South Russian cattle have short horns, but H.'s attempt to give a scientific explanation, though interesting, is refuted by the huge horns of reindeer and elk. H. uses Homer (e. g. Od. iv. 85) as our ancestors used the Bible, to prove everything. (Cf. Introd. p. 21.)
