Syene: hod. Assûan; its name ‘Suan’ is as old as the Sixth Dynasty. Under the Ptolemies it succeeded Elephantine as the capital of Upper Egypt; it was the Roman frontier garrisontown; cf. Tac. Ann. ii. 61 ‘claustra Romani imperii’.
