Χίλων: probably grandson of the famous Ephor (cf. i. 59; Hunt, Rylands Pap. i, pp. 29, 31), and brother of Prinetades (v. 41. 3), the father of Cleomenes' mother.

ἁρπάσας: dependent on φθάσας. The forms of marriage by capture survived at Sparta (Plut. Lyc. 15); Demaratus seems to have turned the form into a reality. On marriage by capture cf. McLennan, Studies in Ancient History, I. ii-v, with Westermarck's criticisms, H. M. ch. xvii.
