ἱπποκόμος. The story of the trick is given by both Justin (i. 10) and Ctesias (15, p. 68). The name Oebares occurs in Nic. Dam. fr. 66 (F. H. G. iii. 400) as that of the adviser of Cyrus in his conspiracy against Astyages; it is explained ἀγαθάγγελος. H. is combining a popular legend (for another fragment of it cf. 86. 2 and Nic. Dam. u. s. p. 405, the signs from heaven) with a misunderstood inscription on a monument of Darius (88. 3 n.).
