πυθόμενοι ... ἰδόντες. The Persians had heard of the Greek fleet from the captured look-out ships (vii. 179 f.) and had no doubt seen them on their way to the anchorage at Aphetae, but their station there was eighty stades from Artemisium (ch. 8. 2).
