H.'s account of the building of the pyramid is creditably free from marvels: contrast the stories in Diod. i. 63 of the ‘mounds’ by which the stones were taken to the top, &c.

κρόσσαι: cf. iv. 152. 4 and vii. 188. 1 with nn. for the derivative πρόκροσσοι. Translate ‘some call “battlements”, others “steps” (literally ‘altar steps’).’ They are called στοῖχος below (§§ 2, 3), when the whole ‘row’ of them is taken into account.
