προεργαζόμενον. πρό is not temporal but = ‘for,’ ‘on behalf of’ cf. ii. 158. 5 ad fin. H.'s tone here is unusually favourable to Cleomenes.

ἐπίβασιν: either making an attack = ἐπιβαίνων (Stein), or getting a footing; cf. Plat. Rep. 511 B, and ἐπιβατεύων (ch. 65. 4) (Schweighauser).

βασιλεύοντι. He was contemporary with Anaxandridas, circ. 550 B. C.; cf. i. 67. 1.
