The theory that the Nile flowed from the circumambient Ocean (cf. c. 23 n.) was widely held. H. is probably refuting Hecataeus (cf. F. H. G. i. 19, fr. 278 for his view); but the Egyptian priests gave the same explanation of the Nile flood (Diod. i. 37).

λόγῳ εἰπεῖν: not ‘so to speak’, but ‘more marvellous to state’.
