αὐτοί: sponte. On the Medism of the Argives cf. vii. 148. 2 n., 150. 1 n.; ix. 10. 1 n. The warning was necessary, since a picked Spartan force might reach the borders of Attica in three days (vi. 120), and, marching by the Megarid, might then block the passes of Cithaeron in Mardonius' rear.
