πρὸς βορέην. Stein points out that the cultivating Scyths really bounded the royal Scyths on the north; but H. does not know of the great bends of the Dnieper and the Don. Really his eastern frontier line for the ‘royal Scyths’, i. e. the Trench, P. Maeotis, and Tanais, ran north-east and not due north as he conceives it. For the Melanchlaeni cf. c. 107 n.
