Κνοίθου καλεόμενος, ‘son of Cnoethus,’ an expression not uncommon in poetry. Cf. also vii. 143. 1 and Thuc. viii. 6.

τὴν παλαιήν. Probably the old city was some few miles from the coast, as was the ancient practice (Thuc. i. 7).
