ἅλες. Dio Chrys. (Or. xxxvi. p. 48) mentions the salt in the second century A. D., and Kinburn (on the Dnieper liman) still supplies South Russia. As salt fish was a main article of Pontic export, the salt was the more important. ἀντακαίους. The ‘sturgeon’ of the Dnieper, which are still famous. Pliny also (ix. 45) denies them a backbone. Athenaeus (118 d) mentions the τάριχος ἀντακαῖον (‘caviare’), but without reference to Olbia.
