κατεκάη. For the burning of the Delphic temple cf. i. 50. 3 n. H., by adding αὐτόματος here, refutes, perhaps intentionally, the story that it was set on fire by the Pisistratidae (Philochorus, fr. 70; F. H. G. i. 395).

ἐπέβαλλε: impersonal here with a construction like ἔδεε; used personally it takes the dative.
