συναμφότεροι, ‘both,’ i.e. ‘the Ethiopians and their neighbours’ (v. s.).

διὰ τρίτου, ‘every second year’ (so διὰ πεντ. inf. ‘every four years’); cf. the biennial tribute from the South to Solomon (1 Kings x. 22). In the outlying parts of the Persian Empire, the old system of ‘gifts’ (as opposed to ‘tribute’) survived. Cf. B. M. G. Pl. XVI, p. 175 for a picture from the Theban monuments of Ethiopians bringing ebony, gold, &c. For Duncker's theory of the great southern extension of the Persian Empire, based on this passage, cf. App. V. 4.
