ἀκροβολισάμενοι: a metaphor from ‘skirmishing’, as λόγων ὠθισμός (78) from hand-to-hand fighting. For this summons to the Aeacidae cf. v. 80. The idea clearly is that the coming of the image would ensure also the spiritual presence and aid of the heroes; cf. the coming of the ark to the camp of Israel (1 Sam. iv. 3).

Apparently only Aeacus and Phocus were regarded in legend as inhabitants of Aegina, and possibly the images are of these two heroes, but their descendants in Thessaly (Peleus, &c.) and Phocis (Paus. ii. 29. 2) would have a share in their honours.
