ἡμίονον. The female mule can bear offspring, though this is rare (E. B.9 xvii. 13); Aristotle (Hist. Anim. vi. 24) asserts it of the mules in Syria, though he had before stated (de Gen. Anim. ii. 8) τὸ τῶν ἡμίονων γένος ὅλον ἂγονόν ἐστι. This story as to the prophecy is a mythical embellishment; Ctesias (u. s.) seems to have omitted it, but in his other details he agreed with H., though contradicting him on the main point. H. (vii. 57. 2) tells a still more wonderful story of mule-birth.
