τί δὲ τοῖτο: sc. διαφέρει. “What difference does this make?” Cf. 497 e. Polus does not wish to slight his master, but only to win admiration for himself.

῾Ηρόδικος: this brother of Gor gias (see Introd. § 4) must not be confounded with another physician of the same name who came from Selymbria (Rep. iii. 406 a, Phaedr. 227 d, Prot. 316 d), and was famed as the first to insist upon the value of gymnastics for health.
