μεγάλη κτἑ.: the use of the adj. is a slightly sarcastic allusion to Polus' extravagant encomiums on rhetoric. The rhetorical question has the force of a neg. Hence the following causal clause.

αὐτὸν ἑαυτὸν κτἑ.: the prefixing of αὐτόν emphasizes the reflexive. H. 688. The subj. of φυλάττειν is indefinite; cf. 456 d.

ἱκανόν: the use of this word is an example of μείωσις, or understatement, the peculiar characteristic of American humor. A similar case is Ant. Tetral. A. β 2 ἐμοὶ δὲ ζῶν τε ἅνθρωπος ἀνατροπεὺς τοῦ οἴκου ἐγένετο ἀποθανών τε . . . ἱκανὰς λύπας . . . προσβέβληκεν.
