ὑγιεῖς: in the physical sense, “undamaged,” but with a pre-understanding of the moral judgment in regard to them; hence the contrast is formed by σαθρά, as in 479 b.
πολλῶν: viz. τοιούτων χρημάτων or ναμάτων. The common manner of expression would be ἄλλοι ἄλλων πολλῶν or ἄλλοι ἄλλων πολλοὶ πολλῶν.
χαλεπά: used absolutely and explained by the addition of καὶ . . . ἐκποριζόμενα. Cf. below (11), where the supplement is self-evident.
ὁ μὲν ἕτερος: i.e. ὁ σώφρων.
9 f. ἕνεκα τούτων: “so far as it depends upon the filling of the casks or desires.” Cf. Theaet. 148 d προθυμίας μὲν ἕνεκα φανεῖται.
