γέλωτα παρεῖχον καὶ κτἑ.: a ‘hysteron proteron.’ See Rid. § 308.

τούτων: i.e. the various means with which Polus had hitherto attempted to confute Socrates.

ὅπερ νυνδή: 472 c.

παράδος: viz. τὸν ἔλεγχον. Cf. below, διδόναι ἔλεγχον “to give a chance for refutation.”

οὐδὲ διαλέγομαι: because scientific investigation by means of conversation is naturally confined to individuals.
