XXXII. κάει: the examples are chosen from cauterizing and surgery, because the healing art is in general for the body what the puni tive administration of justice is for the soul. See on 456 b. The second example is an advance on the first, in so far as the result of the treatment —corresponding to the general idea πάθος—can be expressed in the substantival form τμῆμα.
