ἔστιν κτἑ.: Socrates does not hereby recognize this adducing of ‘testimony’ to be a correct τρόπος ἐλέγχου, but rather implies by the words ὡς σύ τε οἴει κτἑ. (cf. 471 d, 473 b) that it is only a pretended one, which cannot stand against the true one.

σχεδόν τι: does not weaken the idea, but merely softens the expression. The question under discussion is really the cardinal one of life, ‘How can I be happy?’
