καὶ κατ᾽ ἀρχάς: leads us to expect in the following καὶ νῦν a confirmation and climax of praise, —which, however, is changed instead to blame by τοῦ . . . ἠμεληκέναι. Note the zeugma in combining τοῦ . . . ἠμεληκέναι with ἐπῄνεσα. See on 520 b τῷ αὐτῷ. The praise was bestowed in 448 d.

πόθεν: is a question with a negative force, to which the affirmative καὶ μήν corresponds.
