οἱ πλέοντες: the merchants (ἔμποροι) who engage in transmarine trade. Notice the confusion of the order, in which we can see the natural freedom of conversation. The subject of ἐστίν is οὐ τοῦτο ποιοῦσιν, the predicate βούλονται. The subject οἱ πλέοντες floats until the plural verb appears. The neg. in οὐκοῦν is not felt here. H. 1048 a (β).

πράγματ᾽ ἔχειν: is passive to πράγματα παρέχειν.

ἄλλο τι: ‘ἄλλο τι challenges an affirmation with respect to some special portion of the sentence; ἄλλο τι challenges an affirmation with respect to the whole sentence which follows it.’ Riddell, § 22.
